Ploermel is a growing town on the crossroads of Brittany. It has many shops, restaurants, small hotels and a market on Fridays. Two new Shopping Centres have been built within the last year and a Bowling Alley and cinema complex is currently under construction. The nearby Lac au Duc is a man made lake made in medieval times by the flooding of a small valley by the Dukes of Brittany – the village is supposed to still be underneath the lake. The lake has a gently shelving sandy beach ideal for young children, with plenty of room for sand castles, and grassed areas under the trees to picnic and watch the children play on the sand and in Placeholder Imagethe water. This now has a watersports centre with sailing and windsurfing and pedalos [for the not so adventurous – all for hire at reasonable rates] and fishing.Across the other side of the lake is a 9 hole golf course [soon to be extended to 18 holes] and is based at the Golf Hotel Club - Le Roi Arthur [website www.hotelroiarthur.com.] Ploermel is about an hour’s drive from the west coast of Brittany where the town of Carnac features megalithic monuments which predate Stonehenge as well as wonderful beaches, and the Cote Sauvage on the Quiberon peninsula which is also the place to hire a boat out to the many islands in the Golfe of Morbihan.

Vannes is a half an hour’s drive from Ploermel and is an old walled town famous for its medieval 'wash houses'.  At the centre of the Golfe du Morbihan and a splendid yachting marina on the sea inlet, the harbourside is flanked with many seafood restaurants. Through the medieval archway is the old town where the large market is held on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. There is also a large indoor fishmarket and a separate indoor cheese and meat market to browse and buy some of the local delicacies.

Malestroit. another old market town, market held on Thursday mornings. It has some of the oldest medieval houses in the area and the remains of the church where the treaty ending the 100 years war was signed. Set on the Nantes to Brest Canal, in the Summer months it holds open air live music outside the medieval church on Friday nights.  The music is international for all tastes. A very entertaining evening can be had by sitting at one of the outside tables of the pizza or creperie restaurants.  Placeholder Image
